Government sources told ET that labour minister Gangwar has asked his officials to look at the employment policy afresh keeping in mind the challenges thrown up by Covid-19 pandemic.The Santosh Gangwar-led labour ministry will fast-track the National Employment Policy with focus on formalisation of India’s 500 million workforce, including migrants, to ensure job and social security for them.
The idea is to lay out a sectoral roadmap with incentives for employment generation in the country to absorb additional five million people that enter the workforce every year following the recommendations by Thawar Chand Gehlot-led group of ministers for an employment policy in the face of the Covid-induced economic crisis.
Government sources told ET that labour minister Gangwar has asked his officials to look at the employment policy afresh keeping in mind the challenges thrown up by Covid-19 pandemic. “It is our priority and we will soon firm up the policy,” a top government official said.
According to sources, the NEP would have a twin objective of creating an enabling environment for attracting new enterprises and industries to generate new employment opportunities while improving the skill sets of the existing workforce to make them employable as India gears up to attract companies from China to set up manufacturing here.
