In the 2019-20 until June 22, about 270.25 lakh tonnes of sugar has been produced and another about 1.5 lakh tonnes is expected to be produced in the special season till September,2020 in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.PUNE: The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) has estimated India’s 2020-21 sugarcane area will rise 8%, while sugar production would increase by over 12% to 305 lakh tonnes expected in current season.
“Based on the satellite images procured in the latter part of June 2020, the total acreage under sugarcane in the country is estimated to be around 52.28 lakh hectares in 2020-21 sugar season (SS), which is about 8% higher than 2019-20 sugar season’s cane area of around 48.41 lakh hectares,” said a release from ISMA.
Maharashtra and Karnataka would be the main contributors to the rise as these states suffered adverse weather in the previous season. In Uttar Pradesh, the area is likely to fall 1% while sugar output is estimated to be 123.06 lakh tonnes, slightly lower than 126.45 lakh tonnes in the 2019-20 season
In Maharashtra the net cane area has gone up by about 43% in 2020-21. “Sugar production is, therefore, estimated to be around 101.34 lakh tonnes in 2020-21 SS, as against 61.61 lakh tonnes produced in 2019-20 SS, up by about 39.73 lakh tonnes.”
Area under sugarcane in Karnataka is expected to rise to 4.85 lakh hectares from 4.20 lakh hectares in 2019-20, higher by about 15%. Sugar production is estimated to rise to 43.13 lakh tonnes from 34.20 lakh tonnes expected to be produced in 2019-20.
