India halts customs clearance for Chinese goods in Chennai

India has stopped clearances of Chinese goods at Chennai customs, which will now be subject to 100% checks, people aware of the development told ET

No formal instruction has been issued to stop clearances, but these consignments are likely to face 100% check, they said. “From midnight Monday clearances were stalled,” said one of the persons.

There has been a thinking within the government for some time that clearances of Chinese goods should be restricted to West coast ports.

Chennai port is the key port for import of telecom parts and equipment and used by many Chinese companies that are present in the country.

Consignments from China will undergo 100 percent checking instead of random checks.
