Indian Society of Labour Economics urges govt to give cash transfers, free ration to informal worker household

The Indian Society of Labour Economics have urged Centre and states to ensure Rs 6,000 per month cash transfer over next three months to all household with no formal worker and at least 10 kg free ration per person per month for all eligible households.

Besides, it has sought wage compensation to support unorganized sector and the medium and small scale enterprises to tide over the unprecedented crisis arising from the outbreak of COVID-19.

“Given the magnitude of the crisis that the country is facing, these measures will have to be scaled up with immediate and unconditional financial and other support from the national government,” it said in a letter to the Prime Minister and chief ministers of all states.

“Therefore we appeal to the government of India and all the state governments to initiate urgent additional measures that are required to address critical gaps in the short-term relief measures announced so far for the impacted population,” it added .

According to the Indian Society of Labour Economics, assuming that about 20 crore households will require cash assistance, the total quantum of assistance will be about Rs 3,60,000 crores over three months.
