Will living in this mansion improve your health?

When developer Ron Corvino was designing a high-end home in Beverly Hills, he looked for something to set it apart.

The typical luxury amenities like bowling alleys, car galleries or infinity pools felt overdone. So Corvino starting thinking about something that Californians care about: wellness.More from Success

“We live here in LA, the dirtiest air in America, with the healthiest people,” Corvino said. “People care more about health and wellness today than ever before in this country.”

That’s why a whole wing of the house — a six-bedroom, 10,000-square-foot home on a hill with a view to the ocean — is devoted to looking and feeling one’s best. The home includes a private gym, a salon and a spa suite with a massage area, sauna and steam shower, as well as a Himalayan salt room. Corvino plans to list the house for $24.5 million in February.

This new home in Beverly Hills was designed with wellness in mind and includes a spa, workout space and salon. The home is also one of the first houses to have a security system for the body. The brain of the house, made by building systems company Delos, alerts the homeowner to any environmental invaders in the home’s air or water and controls the lights to best fit the residents’ natural circadian rhythm.Read More”I don’t think people are designing homes today for how we live,” said Corivno. “And I think people are missing the boat.”

Can our homes improve our health?

Using technology to create healthier homes and, ultimately, cities, is one of the leading trends in wellness building around the world, according to the Global Wellness institute.

This new home built in Beverly Hills highlights wellness with an air, water and light monitoring system. But can a home actually improve the health of its occupants? Paul Scialla, founder and CEO of Delos, is convinced it can. With all the smart home technology going into homes, Scialla thought health was a missed opportunity. “Most of the smart home systems out there have been focused on energy, convenience, safety,” he said.So Delos created the Darwin system, which senses and purifies the air and water and manages the lighting and temperature.

The Delos system on the roof of the home in Beverly Hills. And instead of simply taking the water utility’s word that a home’s drinking water is safe at the source, the Delos team conducts lab tests using water from the site to understand which contaminants and pollutants are present and prescribes a specific water purification system to address those contaminants.”Our water runs through infrastructure and pipes before we drink it,” he said. “Regardless of how pure it is at the source, we’re picking up all kinds of compounds in the meantime.” The Darwin system also monitors and adjusts light for the most restful sleep, said Scialla.”Artificial lighting is completely disrupting our sleep-wake cycles, our 24-hour circadian rhythm,” he said. “We’re getting exposure to the type of light at 11:00 at night that’s making our bodies think it’s 1:00 in the afternoon, and it’s not triggering the right hormones for sleep.”

    Comfort of a healthy house

The rest of the home was designed to be calming and soothing. Corvino skipped the typical white walls and used natural materials for the surfaces of the house. “We have travertine, limestone, walnut, things that are organic to nature and to the space surrounding the house,” said Corvino. “It plays in to making you feel more comfortable in the home. A lot of these big homes, I think, are just not comfortable.”

The home has a yoga space and a Himalayan salt room as part of its focus on wellness.

Corvino expects buyers will respond to the home’s unique approach to health and wellness. “I think wellness has been top of mind for some time now,” said Corvino. “It’s just becoming now more important to people than ever before.”
